Plastic coatings in the industrial field are not only visual decoration but also a functional layer linked to cost, warranty and long-term reliability. Wrong selection at the sourcing stage often leads to mass rework and lifetime failures. Therefore the coating must be chosen with engineering logic instead of intuitive preference.

Start with the substrate. ABS and PC are coating-friendly and accept general paints; PP and PE require PP primers or corona treatment; engineering plastics like PA or PBT need attention to moisture and thermal stability before coating. When in doubt — run adhesion tests first.

Then match the service condition. 1K acrylic is fine for low-risk consumer parts; 2K PU is preferred for handheld and abrasion-loaded parts; UV-cured coatings are required for outdoor or UV-exposed products. If alcohol, sweat or cleaners are expected, run chemical and rub-resistance tests early.

Consider process feasibility. High-gloss finishes demand clean booths and precise control; matte finishes hide defects and feel softer; metallic, pearl or rubber-feel coatings usually require dedicated lines.

Before mass run, three validations are mandatory: cross-cut adhesion, chemical/rub resistance, and color evaluation under a standard light source. The working formula is simple: Substrate fit + Performance compliance + Process feasibility + Test validation = Right choice.

A coating well-chosen is not for “color”, but for “survival and value” along the product’s lifetime.
