How are cars spray-painted on the production line? — A look inside an automotive paint shop.
The glossy finish on a new car is not born by “manual spraying”, but by a highly standardized and automated coating process inside the paint shop of the factory.

The body-in-white first goes through chemical pretreatment to remove oil and contamination, followed by phosphating for better adhesion. Then it is immersed into an e-coat tank where charged paint particles are deposited evenly onto the entire shell, including boxed cavities that no spray gun can reach. This anti-corrosion layer is the structural backbone of the coating system.
After e-coat curing, the body enters a clean spray booth. Flexible robotic arms replace manual painters and perform primer spraying with pre-programmed 3D paths to level micro-defects and prepare a uniform base. Another set of robots applies the color coat selected for the vehicle, ensuring batch uniformity with no human variability.
The final and decisive layer is the high-gloss clear coat, also robot-applied. This layer gives depth and mirror gloss while providing scratch resistance, UV durability and chemical stability. The vehicle then passes through a long baking tunnel, where each layer is thermally cured into a hard, durable multi-layer film.

Automotive painting is not simply “adding color”. It is a controlled engineering chain that integrates corrosion protection, defect hiding, visual value and environmental durability — turning raw metal into an industrial artwork with measurable lifetime performance.
