Carbon fiber is widely used in automotive, aerospace, and sports equipment due to its light weight and high strength. However, its surface needs special coating to endure heat, UV rays, and scratches. This article explains a step-by-step process to spray paint carbon fiber for maximum durability and gloss.

Step 1: Surface Polishing and Cleaning

Before painting, polish the carbon fiber surface with fine sandpaper to remove burrs and oxidation. This creates micro-roughness for better adhesion. After polishing, clean the surface with a dust-free cloth or air gun to remove debris and oil.

Step 2: First Layer of Varnish

Use a high-temperature-resistant varnish formulated for carbon fiber. Spray evenly from about 15–20 cm away, keeping the layer thin and uniform to avoid sagging.

Step 3: Baking and Curing

Place the coated part in an oven at 60°C for 120 minutes to fully cure the first coat. This step enhances heat resistance and adhesion while preventing air bubbles.

Step 4: Second Spray for Gloss and Leveling

After curing, apply the second coat to increase gloss and smoothness. You can slightly dilute the varnish to improve atomization and achieve a mirror-like finish. Bake again at 60°C for another 120 minutes.

Step 5: Optional Third Layer for Extra Protection

For demanding environments, a third layer can be added with nano TiO₂ or UV absorbers for better sun protection. To improve scratch resistance, include anti-abrasion agents or use a fluorocarbon topcoat.

Step 6: Final Curing and Inspection

Ensure each layer is fully cured before the next application. The final surface should pass heat (≥200°C), UV aging (≥500h), and hardness (≥2H) tests.
