Step 1: Surface Preparation
Before painting, the plastic surface must be degreased to remove oil or mold release agents. Flame or plasma treatment is often applied to activate the surface and improve paint adhesion. For materials like ABS or PP, a specialized primer is required.
Step 2: Primer Application
The primer improves adhesion and fills surface pores. Spray the primer in thin layers, avoiding runs, then bake it at 60–80°C for 20–30 minutes for full curing.
Step 3: Topcoat Spraying
The topcoat determines the final color and finish. Common choices include high-gloss, matte, metallic, or rubber-feel paints. Apply two to three coats, starting with a light mist layer, followed by full layers for even coverage and brightness. Bake at 60–70°C for 30 minutes for best results.
Step 4: Optional Clear Coat
A clear coat can be added for UV resistance, enhanced gloss, and scratch protection. For outdoor products, UV-resistant clear varnish is highly recommended.
Step 5: Common Defects and Solutions
- Bubbles: Caused by moisture—keep surface and environment dry.
- Runs: Too thick spraying—adjust pressure and distance.
- Poor adhesion: Inadequate pretreatment—use proper primer and activation methods.
Through correct surface treatment and layered coating application, plastic spray painting can greatly enhance both aesthetics and functional performance of plastic parts used in cars, appliances, and consumer goods.
