1. Viscosity Control: More Thinner is Not Better
- The Problem: Many applicators add too much thinner for a “smooth” spray. If the paint is too thin, it lacks the internal tension to stay in place against gravity.
- The Solution: Use a Ford No. 4 Cup to measure viscosity. Every industrial paint has an optimal range (typically 18-25 seconds). Correct viscosity ensures the paint “grips” the substrate.
2. Spray Gun Technique: Distance and Angle
- The Problem: Holding the gun too close to the substrate or lingering too long at one spot causes a localized paint overload.
- The Problem: Tilting the gun at an awkward angle leads to uneven distribution.
- The Solution: Keep the gun perpendicular to the surface at a distance of 20-30 cm. Move with a steady, consistent stroke, ensuring a 50% overlap between passes.
3. Excessive Film Build: Speed vs. Quality
- The Problem: Attempting to reach the target thickness in a single pass (especially if wet film exceeds 150 microns) inevitably leads to the entire layer sliding down.
