In the world of industrial coatings, few things are as frustrating as “Lifting.” It occurs when the topcoat’s solvents attack the underlying primer, causing it to swell, wrinkle, or lose adhesion. This isn’t just an aesthetic flaw; it represents a total failure of the coating system.

1. The Root Cause: Strong Solvents vs. “Weak” Primers In chemistry, “like dissolves like.”

  • Polarity Conflict: If a topcoat (like Polyurethane or Nitrocellulose) containing strong polar solvents is applied over a primer with low solvent resistance (like an Alkyd), the solvents will penetrate and swell the primer film.

2. Timing: Rushing the Recoat Window
