In industrial coating, the goal is a smooth, full-bodied finish. However, applicators often face a frustrating issue: a dried paint film with a dimpled, bumpy texture known as “Orange Peel.”

As an industrial paint manufacturer, we have identified the four primary culprits behind this defect:

1. Improper Thinner Matching and Ratio This is the most frequent cause.

  • The Problem: If too little thinner is used, the paint viscosity remains too high, and the atomized droplets cannot flow together.
  • The Match: Using a “fast-dry” thinner in warm conditions causes the paint to set before it has a chance to level out.
  • The Solution: Strictly follow the mixing ratios specified in the Technical Data Sheet (TDS) using the recommended thinner.

2. Spray Gun Pressure and Atomization Your equipment settings dictate the fineness of the paint mist.

  • The Problem: Low spray pressure leads to poor atomization, resulting in large, heavy droplets that hit the surface and create bumps.
  • The Solution: Check your air pressure gauge. Adjust the pressure (typically 0.3-0.5 MPa depending on the paint type) to ensure a fine, even mist.

3. Spray Distance and Technique

  • The Problem: Holding the gun too far from the substrate. The solvent evaporates mid-air, so the droplets are too dry and tacky to level once they land.
  • The Solution: Keep the gun perpendicular to the surface, maintain a distance of 20-30 cm, and use a steady, consistent stroke speed.

4. High Ambient Temperatures

  • The Problem: Spraying under direct sunlight or in extreme heat causes the surface to dry too quickly, trapping the paint in its “bumpy” state.
  • The Solution: Avoid spraying during the hottest parts of the day or switch to a “slow-dry” thinner.
